The Hole in the Ground

The Hole in the Ground is a 2019 Irish psychological horror film directed by Lee Cronin in his feature-length debut. The screenplay was co-written by Cronin and Stephen Shields. The film stars Seána Kerslake as Sarah O’Neill, a single mother who moves to a rural home in Ireland with her young son, Chris, portrayed by James Quinn Markey. Other notable cast members include James Cosmo, Kati Outinen, Simone Kirby, and Steve Wall.

After relocating to the Irish countryside to escape a troubled past, Sarah and her son Chris discover a massive sinkhole in the nearby forest. Following a mysterious incident where Chris briefly disappears, Sarah notices unsettling changes in his behavior, leading her to suspect that the boy who returned may not be her son at all.

The film explores themes of identity, maternal anxiety, and folklore, particularly the concept of changelings from Irish mythology. Its atmospheric tension and psychological depth have drawn comparisons to horror classics like The Babadook and Hereditary.
