Shut In

Shut In (2022) is a psychological thriller directed by D.J. Caruso, featuring Rainey Qualley as Jessica Nash, a young mother who becomes trapped in a pantry while trying to protect her two children from escalating threats posed by her violent ex-boyfriend, Rob (Jake Horowitz), and his unsettling friend, Sammy (Vincent Gallo). The film unfolds as Jessica, confined and isolated, must devise ingenious ways to safeguard her children from imminent danger.

Critics have offered mixed reviews for Shut In. Randy Myers of the San Jose Mercury News described it as “a polished exercise in confined terror with a very nasty bite to it,” awarding it 2.5 out of 4 stars. Conversely, The Guardian‘s Cath Clarke criticized the film, particularly highlighting Vincent Gallo’s involvement, and remarked on its thematic approach, stating it serves as “a clueless poke at Hollywood’s ‘liberal bias’.”

Audience reactions have also been varied. Some viewers appreciated the film’s suspense and performances, noting its effective tension and engaging character dynamics. Others, however, felt that while the movie had moments of intensity, it lacked sustained thrills and depth.
