The Doorman

The Doorman (2020) is an action thriller directed by Ryûhei Kitamura, featuring Ruby Rose as Ali Gorski, a former Marine who becomes a doorman at a luxury New York City apartment building. When a group of armed thieves, led by Victor Dubois (Jean Reno), invades the building to steal priceless art hidden within its walls, Ali must utilize her military training to protect her estranged family and the building’s residents.

Director Ryûhei Kitamura, known for films like The Midnight Meat Train, brings his signature style to The Doorman, aiming for a high-octane, single-location action experience. Ruby Rose delivers a physically committed performance, showcasing her action capabilities. However, some critics have noted that her portrayal lacks emotional depth, with Leslie Felperin of The Guardian stating that Rose “moves with impressive grace in the actiony bits… but so far the jury is very much out on whether she can act more than merely adequately” . Jean Reno’s role as the antagonist has been described as underwhelming, with his character adhering to familiar villain tropes .

The film attempts to deliver intense action sequences within the confined setting of the apartment building. While there are moments of creative violence, some reviewers have criticized the over-edited fight scenes and lack of suspense. The building’s secret passageways, introduced as a plot element, are underutilized, missing an opportunity to enhance the film’s tension and originality .

The Doorman received predominantly negative reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 24% approval rating based on 29 reviews . Critics have pointed out the film’s reliance on clichés and lack of originality. Simon Abrams of RogerEbert.com commented that the movie is “well-versed in clichés and basically watchable, but never really good” .
