The Last Winter (2006) is an eco-horror film directed by Larry Fessenden, blending environmental themes with psychological and supernatural elements.

Set in the remote Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the story follows an oil company’s advance team attempting to establish a drilling base. Environmental scientist James Hoffman (James Le Gros) clashes with the team’s leader, Ed Pollack (Ron Perlman), over the potential ecological impact. As the team becomes isolated, they experience hallucinations and unexplained phenomena, suggesting a vengeful force tied to the land’s disturbance.
Filming took place in both Iceland and Alaska to capture the stark Arctic environment. The narrative was inspired by themes of environmental degradation and the psychological effects of isolation. Fessenden aimed to depict how differing worldviews influence individuals’ responses to environmental crises.
