The Other Lamb

The Other Lamb is a 2019 psychological horror drama directed by Małgorzata Szumowska, marking her English-language debut. The film stars Raffey Cassidy as Selah, a teenage girl born into an all-female cult led by a messianic figure known as the Shepherd (played by Michiel Huisman). Denise Gough co-stars as Sarah, a banished wife who challenges the cult’s oppressive norms.

Set in a remote forest, the cult divides its female members into “Wives” (older women in red) and “Sisters” (younger girls in blue), all subservient to the Shepherd. As Selah matures, she begins to question the cult’s teachings and the Shepherd’s authority. A pivotal moment occurs when Selah is sent to a secluded hut during her menstruation—a period deemed “unclean”—where she meets Sarah, who reveals the Shepherd’s violent tendencies.

The narrative follows the group’s forced exodus after authorities intervene, leading them to a new “Eden.” As the journey unfolds, Selah’s disillusionment grows, culminating in a confrontation that challenges the cult’s hierarchy and the Shepherd’s dominance.

The Other Lamb delves into themes of female empowerment, indoctrination, and the subversion of patriarchal structures. The film employs striking visuals and symbolic imagery to convey Selah’s internal struggle and awakening. Critics have noted its exploration of “Uterus Horror,” highlighting the societal control over female bodies and identities.

The film received mixed to positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 72% approval rating, indicating generally favorable critiques. While some praised its atmospheric tension and visual storytelling, others felt it lacked narrative depth. Roger Ebert’s review mentioned that the film “feels as if there is something missing from the final picture,” pointing to its ambiguous conclusion.

The Other Lamb premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2019. It was subsequently released in the United States on April 3, 2020, by IFC Midnight, and in the United Kingdom on October 16, 2020, by MUBI.
